The South Coast of Kwazulu Natal, must be one of the best places in the world to watch whales. Every year this time, we are blessed to see hundreds of whales on their way to warmer waters, to mate and calve.
All you have to do to see them, is to park your car and watch the ocean, within ten minutes you will see a Southern Right, Humpback, Bryde’s, Minke and even Killer Whales – breaching, tail slapping and frolicking offshore; sometimes just behind the backline.
There is a whale watching deck in Margate and Ramsgate, however the elevated positions of Orange Rocks, St Mikes, Shelly Beach and Port Shepstone, provide the enthusiast with spectacular vantage points to admire these beautiful mammals in their natural environment.

There are also a few really good operators who offer whale watching trips. The law stated that a boat may not get within 300m of a whale and judging by the photograph above , it is both for the protection of the humans as much as it is for the protection and consideration for the whale.
Only a few weeks ago there was a story about a whale that breached and landed on top a a yacht.
Here is the actual footage of the whale breaching and landing on the yacht.
